A Mitchells Plain based NGO, StreetSmART, is focusing on getting youth in Cape Town, to turn away from drugs and gangsterism through art and culture. Sm-ART as it has become commonly known, is doing so by supporting art mentorships. Spokesperson, Zeenat Isaacs, says they aim to provide the youth with skills to combat unsavoury practices in society or other societal ills. Sm-ART further aims to upskill the youth in hip hop, art, dance, street art, and poetry. They are also focused on health issues such as HIV and TB. About 2000 people have been killed in various crime-related incidents since the beginning of November last year, most of them gang-related.
