Non-profit organisation, SMART, arranged a day of activities for young and old in Lentegeur on Saturday.

SMART stands for Supporting Mentorship through Art, and the group hosted their ‘Beautifying The Vandalism’ event at the corner of Morgenster Road and AZ Berman Drive at the Wall Flower Field.

This field is notorious for merting and gang shootings, but despite it’s bad rep, mensecame out to support SMART’s cause.

Organisers, Rizah Potgieter and Zeenat Isaacs, say they want to uplift their community.

“This is our second event and the first time in this area,” said Rizah.

“We had to approach the gangsters and tell them that we want peace for at least the day so we can do the event.”

There were food stalls, an exhibition by the VW Car Club, singers and dancers, and even a modelling show to keep mense entertained.

Tots, tweens, teens and moms, drag queens, and even the ladies from the Lobelia Seniors Club strutted their stuff in hip hop and evening wear.

Luciano Koopman, 17, from Eastridge kicked off the MC battles followed by a dance battle.

Resident Pamela Williams, 62, says she had a carefree day.

“I took part in the modelling and got to enjoy the educational things they had also. It’s a relief seeing our children being able to play in peace,” Pamela explains.

The group gathered donations of toys and clothes which will be handed over to an unnamed Mitchells Plain safe house.
